Laminate is a floating floor — it clicks together and rides on top of the subfloor rather than fastening down. That makes it fast to install and easy to live with, but it also means the subfloor has to be flat, or the planks flex and the joints wear. Preparation is most of what separates a laminate floor that lasts from one that clicks and gaps.

Laminate and its cousin vinyl plank get compared constantly. Laminate gives a convincing wood look at a friendly price and handles traffic well, but it's less water-tolerant than vinyl plank — which matters for entries, kitchens, and anywhere a West Michigan winter tracks in meltwater. The right choice depends on the room, and an honest estimate says so.

Describe the rooms, what's down now, and the traffic they see. Note grade level and any moisture history — below-grade rooms may point toward vinyl plank instead. Transitions at doorways, underlayment, and old-floor removal round out the scope; name them and the estimate is complete.

The most common laminate failure isn't the plank — it's a subfloor that was never leveled, so joints flex and gap under traffic. Ask what the prep includes before comparing prices; a quote that skips subfloor flattening isn't cheaper, it's just deferring the real cost. Continuous runs across a main level also price better and hide seams than piecemeal room-by-room work. One more practical note: acclimating the planks to the room before installation matters in a climate with real humidity swings, so the floor settles instead of buckling once the seasons turn.
